Sometimes Dave and I reminisce about the way we used to live. A lot of things were different. Like the food we ate.
Some things I considered healthy back then, today I avoid eating. Products labeled healthy…but really just a lot of processing and chemicals. We’ve tried many different ways of eating. Like anything I’m interested in, I immersed myself in information about these differing perspectives.
These days, we keep it simple. Eat the most nourishing REAL food we can get. I know what this means to me. Mostly animal and plant parts. (I wish we could consistently source non-captured systems parts, but we do what we can.) Eating this way, we don’t eat a lot. It’s filling. It seems to work well.
We take those things…mix them together and cook a meal. Tools are stainless steel, cast iron, glass, and wood. We enjoy it and are grateful.
We buy spices in bulk. 1-5lb bags of Cinnamon, Peppers, Paprika, Cumin, Turmeric, Allspice, Nutmeg, Chili powder, and more. I shop around for the best value. I’ve become efficient at using the internet to save us money. We’re frugal, and we prioritize spending on what is important and limit what is not.

We do things such as growing Vegetables and herbs in a garden. We boil beef bones for broth. We eat liver. Real butter. Eggs. Fresh seafood whenever we can. Bread is baked…we’re selective about the flour – from Italy.
Dave goes from his chair to the kitchen. Back and forth. Because he cares, he cooks the most incredible meals….like today’s pictured – beef roast in our slow cooker – with a homemade sauce, sauteed mushrooms & onions – Monterey Jack cheese – home-baked sourdough buns crusted with fresh herbs.
Best food: Wild & Local – animals & plants. Very restricted access. In the USA it is very hard to access great food…most of what is available is extremely diminished in quality from start to finish…because of the way the captured systems run things.
Marcus Aurelius – book – Meditations is about Stoicism: He says we should be undisturbed by things outside our control. Focus instead on what is within your power.
“You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
I wonder how much Marcus held to these musings. I’d say I’m fairly stoic. Others often describe me that way. But I have moments when I’m bothered – when I feel alienated by the senselessness of the suffering being created. I can’t help it. I find myself wishing things would change significantly. lol
